Our Story

Nearly a quarter of a century ago, a group of bakers got together and began churning out a misshapen little confection that caused quite a stir. It was ugly. It became "The Ugly".

First sold from a bakery storefront in Kannapolis, North Carolina, the Uglies were an immediate hit.

The founding group outgrew its facilities just as investors were noticing the success of the Ugly. The Apple Baking Company ramped up production and relocated operations to its current home on Apple Road just outside historic Salisbury, North Carolina.

Over the years we've churned out more Uglies than we can count. We've even had brushes with fame. During the late '80s and early '90s, baseball legend Mickey Mantle served as the executive director of sports for the Apple Baking Company, lending his name and image to a limited edition tin that contained our popular pound cakes. And as we entered the new century, we continued to draw new Ugly fans.

In 2010, nearly 10 million Uglies were consumed across the United States. As new generations discover the fresh quality and homemade taste created everyday at the Apple Baking Company, our company continues to give them the sweet-tooth satisfaction they desire.
